The PATRIOT Act was passed into law by president George W. Bush on October 26, 2001, 6 weeks after the 9/11 attacks. The U.S Patriot Act stands for “The Uniting and Strengthening America By Providing Appropriate Tools required to intercept and obstruct Terrorism”.

The NSA or National Security Agency collects information on just about every citizen in America. They collect phone call data and text data. The government knows what you read online and what websites you visit. They know when you are going on a trip, if you are traveling via a plane or train and how long you will be gone. In addition they can access your email accounts, contacts and collect metadata. Your every move can be tracked my smart phones and 2/3 of Americans have smart phones.  The government can access your credit card records and go through your purchases.  Almost all of this is done without a warrant or without you knowing.
